As Oregon ends its experiment with decriminalizing drug use, it is replacing jail time for people caught with illegal drugs, with getting “dropped off” at a Deflection Center.
Multnomah County spokesperson Jenni Lee described the new Deflection Center as ” a place where once they come in, drug using individuals can get connected with treatment resources, or just leave.”
“It’s harsher than it sounds,” Lee said. “Most of the drug users are on the west side of Portland but the Deflection Center is on the east side. So, after the police drop addicts off they’ll have to walk back, or take public transit and we know how hellish that can be.”
Lee was also enthusiastic about the Deflection Center’s new entrance design.
“We got the idea from traffic roundabouts. Instead of regular doors, we’re putting in a revolving door. It should reduce traffic jams at the entrance.”
Cost prohibited the installation of the County’s preferred system, which was facial recognition technology, that would allow addicts to just walk by the Deflection Center instead of going to all the trouble of entering before leaving.
