Pressure to represent diversity and inclusion on TV and in movies, is leaving some mothers in an awkward position.

“I was sewing her halloween costume while my husband was fixing a leak in the sink when my daughter asked me why I wasn’t fixing the sink and daddy sewing? I told her I was better at sewing but she didn’t care. She said that on TV all the mothers build houses, or fix cars, or do stuff with pipes and wires.”

Wanda Dover is typical of many moms, frustrated with fanciful depictions of American families in commercials and shows.

“Ads are the worst,” Dover said. “I don’t know any moms who repair jet engines, but I know several who are teachers, or stay at home moms,” Dover said. “When did we become toxic?”

Like many women, Dover explained to her daughter that the families in TV commercials represent someone’s idea of what families should be, not what they are. Then Dover asked her daughter if she had any other questions.

“Yes, why isn’t daddy black?”
