After Oregon recriminalized drug use, Portland police decided to use a drug sniffing dog named Max to identify drug users in Homeless camps. Max is still coming down from an epic high.

“Max started acting loopy a block away,” K-9 Officer Bowser said. “When he got a sniff of the first tent, he started slobbering, and prancing around. Then he would just suddenly stop and stare at nothing for long periods with his tongue hanging out.”

Before getting assigned to look for drugs in downtown Portland, Bowser and Max had worked the Portland International Airport beat.

“We mostly found marijuana and cocaine in suitcases,” Bowser said. “When we do, Max gets a doggie treat but we can’t do that in downtown or he’d get fat.”

Officer Bowser was not hopeful about Max’s return to duty.

“We may have to retire Max,” Bowser said sadly. “On his first outing after his episode, he broke away and ran into a 7-11 and started eating the Doritos.”
