After $1.3 million in repairs needed because of protester damage, the Portland State University library reopened.

“The windows have been replaced, the graffiti is painted over, the bad words are gone and there’s new furniture,” spokesperson Toni Feely said. “All we need now are students.”

Student reactions were mixed.

“I want to see that,” senior Shelly Shelbourne said. “Which building is the library?”

“What’s a library again?” football player Biff Biffson asked. After it was explained, Biff said, “I wonder if my paper writer guy goes there?”

Student activist Wendy Storm was enthusiastic about the reopening.”Good, we needed a blank canvas,” she said, as she shook a can of red spray paint.

Freshman Johnny Storm was puzzled about the function of a library.

“Does it have something I can’t get online?” Storm asked. “Books? If it’s not in a journal it’s out of date and journals are all online.”

Meanwhile, Feely was leading group tours of the repaired facility but noticed that most of the visitors were not students.

“The only question I got asked was if the security system had been upgraded,” Feely said.

As this reporter left, she noticed a large group of students gathering outside holding signs saying “Stop Israel’s Beeper War!” and “Students Against Pager Abuse.”
