While the idea of an asteroid becoming Earth’s second moon got a lot of fanfare at first, now only hardcore sky watchers even notice it.
NASA spokesperson Sean Starsky described the arc of the newly discovered asteroid.
“It just came out of nowhere, turned out it wasn’t the big deal everyone thought it would be, then dropped into orbit and in two months it will be gone.”
Starsky explained that the asteroid really got more attention than it deserved.
“It was novel at first and when we realized it would be a partner moon to The Moon, it got some attention. But it turned out to be just a goofy little space rock that will drift away back to obscurity.”
When asked about the naming, Starsky said the name was not final yet.
The astronomer who first identified the asteroid is from Minnesota and proposed we name PT5 after their governor. However, some on the team prefer naming it “Knucklehead.”
