Arguing against the merger of the two companies, the FTC asserted that the joining would eliminate head-to-head competition between the top two US handbag makers and create a massive company with the power to unfairly raise prices of their goods.
Lawyers for Coach and Michael Kors made the case that “handbags are not an essential, and that women have the power of choice and can choose to purchase less expensive products.”
US District Judge Jennifer Rochon shook her head as that argument was made, her Tiffany white gold, pearl and diamond earrings ($1,650), sparkling as she did.
The argument ignores the fact that “handbags are important to many women, not only to express themselves through fashion but to aid in their daily lives,” the judge said. “You want women to carry their belongings in Trader Joe’s bags?”
Having filed as a Friend Of The Court, Google approved of the decision.
“The merger of these two handbag manufacturers threatens our economy,” Google spokesperson Owen Yu said. “One company should never be allowed to monopolize a market.”
Disney also issued a statement supporting the blocked merger.
“When companies gobble up successful competitors you hinder creativity, and pretty soon you produce the same blah products over and over.”
The Disney statement also included a promo for Toy Story 5.
After the hearing, Judge Rochon left the courthouse wearing Jimmy Choo Romy 60 black patent leather pumps ($750), a Chloe slim multi-stitch wool belted cardigan ($1,990)and Chloe wide-leg stretch wool trousers ($1,350).
