Oregon’s Corbett School District recently discovered a $3 million budget shortfall. The accounting error was made by an employee of the Multnomah County Educational Service District (MCESD), which managed the Districts’ finances.
Devastated by the discovery, the tiny school district began laying off teachers and other employees and planning to shorten the school year. Offering a lifeline, the MCESD agreed to provide a $2 million bridge loan so the district could keep schools open the full school year.
“Hey, we screwed the pooch,” MCES spokesperson Guido Marconi said. “So we stepped up with a loan. We’re standup guys like that. It’s for the kids, see? Of course Corbett’s gotta pay the vig on time or we break some legs, but it’s nuttin’ personal, just bidness.”
After the loan papers were signed, the MCES employee who made the “error,” received a performance bonus that included cash and a green Cadillac Escalade.
