Mirroring the naming of a trans woman to the National Women’s Hall of Fame, Trans Bugs Bunny* was added to the National Female Cartoon Character Hall of Fame.
Announcing the honor was last year’s inductee, Jessica Rabbit. During the introduction, Bugs Bunny was glowing in her Carmen Miranda-like Caribbean frock, and fruit basket hat.
“What’s up Doc?” Bugs Bunny quipped when she stepped to the microphone, then hit Jessica Rabbit with a giant mallet.
When the laughter subsided, Bugs explained how her travels through life led to her new gender identity.
“I knew I shoulda taken that left turn at Albuquerque,” Bugs said.
While the selection was generally praised, overlooked black and white star, Betty Boop, let her trans bias slip.
“But he’s a boy,” Betty claimed in her annoying little girl voice. “I used to think a girl’s got to do what a girl’s got to do, but now it’s a boy’s got to do what a girl’s got to do.”
Then she added:
“Boop, boop, de boop!”
Equally outraged was Daffy Duck who came dressed in a Carmen Miranda outfit similar to Bugs’s. While mostly sputtering and spraying spit, Daffy managed to say:
“Sufferin’ succotash! Bugs eths desthpicable.”
Many believe that Daffy was not admitted to the Hall of Fame because he is faking his gender transition simply to compete with Bugs Bunny. Others think it was because of bias against anthropomorphic animals who lisp.
*Bugs Bunny chose not to change his name after his transition because “Bugs” is gender neutral, and can also serve as all of his pronouns: bugs, bugs’, bugs’s.
