The first all-female “crew” was launched to the edge of space in a Blue Origin capsule. Making history were celebrity Katy Perry, B-level celebrity Gayle King, unkowns, Aisha Bowe, Amanda Nguyen and Kerianne Flynn, and Lauren Sanchez who is famous for being Jeff Bezos’ fiancé.
In addition to being the first all female “crew” since 1963, here are other firsts they accomplished.
First crew to be told to “Not touch anything.”
First crew who insisted on having a “We don’t do windows” clause in their contract.
First time a crew member sang, “What a Wonderful World” in zero g. Unfortunately, it was Gayle King.
First crew to report from space their status by saying, “We’re fine; everything’s fine,” thus convincing ground control something must be wrong.
First crew to plan a potluck reunion while weightless.*
First crew to call themselves “astronauts” when no one else does.
First crew to agree that going to Disneyland and riding Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy is funner than the Blue Origin ride and costs about the same.
When asked what the biggest challenge was in assembling an all female crew, Jeff Bezos said, “Finding six women that could agree on the shoes they would wear with their designer flight uniforms.”
At publication time, there were reports that Jill Biden had booked a Blue Origin ride so she can then forever insist people call her Dr. Astronaut Jill Biden.
*Here’s what meridian-street.com has learned so far about the potluck planning. The potluck will be at Katy’s house; Lauren is bringing organic potato salad.
