Since first entering politics, President Trump’s jokes have often been taken literally by the mainstream press and other Democrats.
Trump Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt, gave an example. “When President Trump was asked about what happened to Hillary’s missing email, he quipped ‘Maybe the Russians have them.’” Two years of expensive investigation could have been avoided if the President’s joke had been followed by a ba-dum chsh!”
There was momentary confusion in the newly diversified Press Room, as reporters consulted with their style guides for how to express a drum riff in words. There was no consensus, and AP, Reuters, New York Times, and the Poughkeepsie Journal all came up with different options, including ba-dum-CHING, ba dum bum tishh, and Ba Ba Ba Boom!
Podcasters in Trump’s “New” Press Pool stayed out of the fray and just practiced making the sound with their mouths, since they never write anything anyway, and it is not clear they know how to write.
For the history books, Trump’s first use of the drum riff came when he mentioned that the Iranian negotiators that he had been dealing with would not be negotiating anymore because “They are all dead.”
Asked by a reporter if they had died in Israel’s attack on Iran, Trump said, “They didn’t die of COVID,” which was followed by a drum riff.
Most in the room agreed that the drum riff added clarity to the President’s comments, and that moving forward no reporters or politicians would misrepresent his words ever again.
