When tattoos went mainstream in the 80’s many sociologists argued it would be another passing fad. However, decades later, people continue to stain their skin in a wide variety of ways.

Misty Heide says she has no regrets about the aging tattoo she has on her arm.

“I thought the Backstreet Boys would be like the Beatles and be hot forever,” Heide said. “But I don’t regret getting their faces on my arm. Mostly.”

Other tattooed people we spoke to also said they had few second thoughts.

“My only regret is that I got a flaming skull on my neck just before neck grenades got popular,” Raleigh Regular said, touching his huge tattoo.

Even timid people choose to get tattooed.

“I wanted a tattoo, but not one that I had to look at every day, or anyone could see,” said Librarian Lucy Luna. “So I got a small one low on my back so it doesn’t show even when I’m in a swimsuit.”

Given the continuing love of skin art, here are the most common reasons people get tattoos.

  1. Because everyone else has one (reasoning not just for teens anymore).
  2. “I just wanted to know what it would feel like to be stuck a thousand times with a needle.”
  3. Because our love is a forever love.
  4. I was drunk. All six times.
  5. I was high. Like all the time.
  6. Someone had to do something about global warming (see #5 above).
  7. I thought Kamala would win.
  8. Bud Light paid me and others to help them get off the conservative s–t list.
  9. Lost a bet.
  10. I just loved the Pac 12 conference so much.

At publication time, Bad Bunny had reached the top of the most popular tattoo list.
